The SASA Setton Children's Literature Prize

About the prize

The SASA Setton Prize for Illustrated Children's Literature was established by Hilda Stone in memory of her husband, the late Philip Stone, to encourage high-quality literary work in Hebrew and to strengthen the world of children's literature in Israel. The project is led by Sonia Gomes de Mesquita, representative of the donor family, out of an understanding that literature has great power to spark the imagination and build emotional resilience — especially for children going through challenging periods in their lives, such as hospitalization and illness. The prize serves as a platform for encouraging writing and creative work of a high standard, and strengthens the connection between culture, education, and community.

Beyond creating the texts and illustrations, the creators take an active and moving part in the work on the ground through personal visits to children's wards. In these encounters, the authors and illustrators hold creative workshops, reading sessions, and open dialogue with the children, making it possible to turn reading from a passive experience into an empowering and inspiring human encounter. This unique connection creates a shared language of hope and resilience that deeply affects both the hospitalized children and the creators themselves, and reinforces literature's place as an essential component of the recovery process.
